How to Choose a Reputable Organization

What do families do after they have gone to the police? Who do they turn to?
Police do not always provide families with the resources available to them.

Many then will do the only thing they know, they will turn to the internet to seek out help.
Sadly many of the groups or organizations are not legitimate and capitalize on the vulnerability of the families.

How do they choose a reputable organization?

We never like to think about the possibilities of something ever happening to our children or a loved one. However being alert and educated before anything ever happens puts families one step ahead.
Here are some valuable tips about how to choose a reputable org.

1. Beware of websites or organizations that ask to be in control of your missing case. YOU are in control and no one should try to take that away from you. To let someone else have control of what goes in the press, what is published on a website, or who can speak on the families behalf is to potentially lose valuable information or tips that may come in.

ChildSeek for the families. Any tips that come to us through a tip are turned over to law enforcement in charge of the case.

2.Never give money to an organization that offers to help for a fee. There are so many unscrupulous people that will try to make money off of others tragic situations. Some will ask for money to put up websites, to pay for increased bandwidth, or to make phone calls. Most legitimate sites will do all of the above for free, often relying on money out of their own pockets or contributions.

3.Legitimate sites will also disclose their personal information to family members, such as phone numbers, contact numbers and personal email addresses. If a site or organization will not give out phone numbers or contact information, then they probably have something to hide and therefore most likely are up to no good.

4.Organizations that are legitimate will always provide references from other families and law enforcement agencies that they have worked with. This will be never be done without first getting approval from the referring families. No personal or confidential information will ever be given out without consent.

5. Any organization that contacts families with a missing loved one will ALWAYS treat the family with respect. They will NEVER harass families or try to take advantage of them. If offers to help are turned down, the organization should ALWAYS be gracious and move on.
Some of the families that have contacted us tell us of being threatened with lawsuits by organizations that proved to only want money or notoriety. ChildSeek would suggest that if this ever happens to a family wanting help, they should immediately contact law enforcement!

6. Do not be afraid to ask an organization who is involved in the organization and in what capacity.

ChildSeek would also like to highly encourage ANYONE who has been approached by a missing person organization and has doubts about the legitimacy or intentions of that organization to call the proper law enforcement agency.
We at ChildSeek feel that anyone who charges to "help" families with missing loved ones' should be looked at with extreme caution!
